Pityriasis Alba is a very common skin condition in which dry, scaly pale patches, which mostly occur on the face. This condition usually affects children. The word Pityriasis means scaling of the skin, whereas Alba means white in Latin. These patches are usually round, oval or irregularly shaped, having a diameter of 1-4 cm. The exact cause for Pityriasis Alba is not known, it is considered as a mild form of Eczema. Eczema is caused due to the immune system of the body. Pityriasis Alba is found all over the world, but it is found more often in developing countries. This condition is not contagious. Diagnosis for this condition should consider vitiligo (skin disease where a part of the skin loses its pigmentation) and tinea (fungal infection of the skin). This condition requires no treatments as it goes away with time, but if itchiness and scale is present, then a weak steroid like hydrocortisone is also used. In very severe cases, PUVA therapy is taken.
