Pemphigus Vulgaris is a chronic skin disease in which there is blistering which is often very painful. As it is an autoimmune disease in nature, the body’s own immune system mistakenly starts attacking its own body. Pemphigus Vulgaris affects the mucous membranes that are found in mouth, nose, eyes, throat, genitals and lungs. The exact reason for this disease is still unkonwn. Very rarely, medications can also cause Pemphigus Vulgaris. This is not contagious in nature, a persons genes might put his or her children at risk of this. A skin biopsy is done to determine this condition. The treatment aims to decrease the pain in these blisters, while at the same time, prevent complications like infections. Generally, immune suppressing drugs are given so that not more of these blisters erupt. Development of new antibodies like monoclonal antibodies have a promising future in the field of curing Pemphigus Vulgaris.
